Ernst’s Early Years
Born into a large Catholic family in 1891, Max Ernst was influenced by the world of art very early in his life.
His father was a self-taught painter and a teacher. His father’s love for painting the outdoors rubbed off on Max and it encouraged him to begin sketching and painting.
In 1909, he began his collegiate studies at the University of Bonn, studying a variety of subjects.
