    Claude Debussy, born Achille-Claude Debussy on August 22, 1862, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France, was the eldest of five children in a modest family. His father, Manuel-Achille Debussy, owned a china shop, and his mother, Victorine Manoury Debussy, worked as a seamstress.

    Despite their humble circumstances, Debussy’s musical talents were recognized early on.

    Debussy began piano lessons at the age of seven with an Italian violinist, Jean Cerutti.
