Wallace Smith Broecker was born into a Christian fundamentalist family in Chicago, Illinois, in 1931.
He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois, and earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and Master of Arts in geology from Columbia University in 1953 and 1954, respectively.

Academic Career
Broecker began his academic career as an assistant professor of geology at Columbia University in 1959. He rose through the ranks and became an associate professor in 1961, a full professor in 1964, and a named professor in 1977.
